Helga Douglas, started Svala in 2012 to produce lingerie, sleepwear and lounge wear that was sustainable, vegan and luxurious.

Douglas who is originally from Sydney, now lives in LA. The inspiration for Svala’s name comes from Iceland, where her mother is from. Helga has always loved the Icelandic girl’s name Svala, meaning bird or swallow which is a symbol of love, loyalty, freedom and hope in many cultures. Svala is inspired by Helga’s affinity for the relaxed, colorful feel of Sydney and LA and the simplicity of Scandinavian design. Svala has been featured in publications such as Eluxe Magazine, Trend Prive, EcoCult, Sustainably Chic, Linie International and Forbes.

“Svala aims to create beautiful, practical pieces with sustainability in mind,” Douglas tells me. “We are always searching for new, innovative fabrics and manufacturing processes and produce locally in Los Angeles. We use fabrics such as organic cotton, viscose from bamboo and reclaimed factory surplus lace as well as recycled paper in our marketing materials.”

Svala is donating a Svala Mari tank made from viscose from bamboo, dyed using organic dyes, with a trim made from reclaimed lace to help celebrate Earth day.

This tank is light and comfy for bed or team it with jeans for a casual, pretty look. Offers support with adjustable straps. The body of the materials is 95% viscose from bamboo, 5% spandex. The trim is 65% organic cotton, 24% viscose, 11% polyurethane.

In their commitment of producing sustainable clothing, Svala is always on the lookout for new eco-conscious, sustainable fabrics, as well as, dyeing and manufacturing processes. Here are some of the fabrics they use; organic cotton, reclaimed lace, and bamboo.
